It's possible she's been 'ported home. If I knew where she was when it happened... then again, if it actually has been a week, there might not be much of a trace left to follow...
I know it's 'possible she's been ported'!! I wanted you to tell me she wasn't, that she'd gone to visit you or something, god, I don't know. I can't do this.
You can trace it? How? Let's assume she was in her apartment. What do you need?
Just access. I've already got the tools. The thing about spacefolding is it leaves behind wrinkles, so to speak. Residual anomalies that make it easier to recreate the original fold. And the more dramatic the fold, the bigger the crease.
[Ask him about the time he followed somebody literally to the heat death of the universe.]
I see. Would it be possible to create something to detect spacefolding as it's happening? Like a seismograph for spacetime shit? Or even an early warning system?
That's... actually a really good idea. I'll look into it.
I'm not picking up anything in the apartment. Where does she work? I'll try there next. Although I doubt it was there, you'd think someone would have noticed a coworker vanishing into thin air. Mine certainly love to complain about it. [Especially Ted, but he complains about everything.]
I'd appreciate whatever kind of warning or information we can get on it, thanks, man. Not going to lie, it's the first time this has hit so close to home and I'm still just
She worked for a robotics firm in Marutia Falls.
You're going to give someone a heart attack one of these days with those portals. Just don't pop into our bathroom or something, okay?
Oh, don't worry, I'm already avoiding your bathroom.
[Trying to use humor to make Newt feel better? Probably. Seriously, though-]
Keep in mind, Newt, if she has been ported out, she's probably a good deal better off than she would be here. No more Kaiju, and I'm sure she'll have a hero's welcome.
No, I know. I know. She's definitely better off there, even with Pentecost dead, because she and Raleigh are going to have to help the world rebuild and give it the hope it needs and all of that. But if she goes, what's to stop it from being YOU next? Or Hiro?
Well, first, I'm pretty sure those probabilities are only loosely correlated if at all. Her disappearance doesn't influence the chance of anyone else's.
... But second, until we find a way to thwart the thing in the Porter, that's always going to be a possibility. I don't mean to sound cold, but it's true.
Hermann and I had a discussion with...someone and from that birthed a really dumb/brilliant idea. Because plugging our brains into the enemy is a thing that seems to work for us.
We considered building a pons and drifting with the Fate.
[There's a longer than normal pause before he replies, because it takes him a moment to formulate one that's not just "you're insane."]
That is possibly the most insane idea I've ever heard. I don't doubt you could find a way to make it happen, but... Newt, whatever's occupying the Porter right now, it's not Lachesis.
Here. Some kids managed to break in last month, offered it a sacrifice, of all things, and apparently that actually worked, as ludicrous as it sounds. But it claims it's not Lachesis. So this could be a different entity from Earth-α, or something else altogether, we just don't know. I won't say you shouldn't ever try it, but right now it's too dangerous.
How did I miss that? Anyway, thanks. It was a pretty old plan, to be honest, and we didn't fully intend to do it soon. Not off the table entirely, but not a definite thing. Lots to consider.
Frankly, Hermann probably wants to go home more than I do, but if we're going to do an insane thing, he's not doing it alone. Besides, I've got to make SOME contribution to the Porter quest, right? I mean more than lab rats.
